Assessment Task 2
Title: Studio Studies
Due: Week 8
Weighting: 30%
Completed greenware progress checkpoint week 5. Completed Studio Exercises 1-4 due week 8 in class
Printed A3 poster of Exercise 1 plus journal submiHed in week 8 class
Assessment Brief: In Studio Studies you will pracKce a range of skills and knowledge associated with set studio exercises that develop different aspects of ceramics studio research and pracKce. A series of studio competencies in safe materials handling and ceramic processes needs to be completed. You will also undertake model, mould making, casKng and surface treatment exercises that include conceptual and technical content. These will build your skills and support your compleKon of other course projects. Work should be submiHed for a mid semester review accompanied by a visual diary documenKng details of pracKce and progress towards the compleKon of each exercise. All studio work should be undertaken in an effecKve manner, observing appropriate workshop guidelines for ceramic processes and equipment that manage the risks of health, safety and environmental impacts.
Studio Exercises :
These exercises are designed to be completed in the Kme equivalent to one to three studio sessions. To satisfy Assessment Task 2 you must complete all 4 exercises listed below.
1. Form a team with another class member to undertake this exercise, and decide whether you will undertake either the stereo or tropism theme below. Each team will need to present an arrangement of 4 objects for assessment. Each team member must also submit an A3 pdf poster of their Stereo or Tropism project, summarising their individual contributions to the team project under the headings: ‘concept’, ‘technical’ process and ‘presentation’. Each team member should include in their poster a photograph visualising an individual tessellation /presentation arrangement.
Choose either
• “Stereo” – Create a 3d computer model and 3d print a simple geometric prototype that responds to an interpretation of the concept ‘stereo’. The prototype should fit within a 120 x 120 mm x 120mm cube and must include at least one face with a straight edge.Make a drop out plaster mould from the prototype and create 4 slipcast forms from the mould. Explore the tessellation possibilities of your forms, using fired finished that employ transfer printed graphic treatments ( screen print, transfer print or decal).
or
• “Tropism”- Use computer generated plan drawings and cross section profiles to prepare a clay prototype for a simple drop out dish mould . The prototype must include at least one face with a straight edge. Create the mould, by casting plaster in a cottle. Slip cast 4 forms, apply glazed finishes and fire them, responding to an interpretation of the word ‘tropism’. Explore the tessellation possibilities of your form, and textured graphic treatments that are exploited by a transparent gloss glaze. The prototype should fit within a 200 x 120 mm x 50mm high rectangular prism.
Each team member will will receive the same mark for exercise 1, but you will be given an individual mark for other exercises.
- Use ceramic stains to create a 5 Kle colour gradient ‘line blend’ glaze test, develop one of the coloured glazes and apply it to your ceramic work. Mount the Kles on the board supplied and label with the required information. (suggestion – use one of the results to glaze your ‘tropism’ form.
- Successful complete (pass) a short quiz on Fundamental Ceramic terms, studio materials and processes. The quiz will be available for completion until the night before assessment in week 8.
- Successfully complete (pass) a safe operations and maintenance induction competency for one of the following studio activities. ( if you have already completed one of these proficiencies in another course, choose a different one)A. Kiln packing / firing principles and practice.
B. Use the Spray gun to apply glaze or slip. Clean and maintain the gun. • Using the pug mill to recycle clay
