Panel One-Mother and Daughter

WEEK: 3.0

Composition rendered and canvas prepared for painting

Class time and personal research

Max Beckmann was inspired by stained glass windows and the triptych.

Process preparation

This week I used class time and beyond to render my images onto my pre-stretched, primed canvas’. I had originally hoped to use a large piece of unstretched canvas for my design, however after watching the canvas stretching demonstration of another students work by the lecturer I thought twice. With my current schedule to complete the project I decided to purchase three canvas boards and adapt my design to this format. The board size was decided by what was left in the art store and rethinking how I was going to adapt my design! I purchased two 38×38 and one 38×24.

Since my final design composition was created in Photoshop, I used a data projector to enlarge the design and render straight onto the surface. I had a few issues with lining all three designs up and of course some issues with the data projector, but managed to complete by the end of the three hours. On reflection mounting all three canvas boards onto the wall simultaneously would have been better, however this is dependant on the how when there are no hooks or even hanging systems at COFA. Go figure!

Lecturer feedback

I had a chance to discuss my ideas with the lecturer during this lesson who seemed pleased with my composition. He wanted more information on how my ideas were to link with Beckmann’s Mother and Daughter, which is the theme of one of the panels in the triptych. He emphasised the importance of my research in linking my artwork to Beckmanns process and philosophies.  After this  discussion I realising the limited time I will have to complete the data file and the canvas by week 6.  I decided to start all three panels, but aim to complete only one for the assessment task.
